Rice water, a miracle potion for the skin and hair

Every time you prepare rice, you throw the rinse water and the cooking water into the sink. Yet rice water is a precious ally for the beauty of your skin and hair. The next time you cook rice, keep its water and you will obtain a very powerful beauty product with almost magical virtues.

How to prepare rice water

Which rice to choose: It is preferable to use raw organic rice but you can use any variety of preferably raw rice you have at home: basmati rice, long rice, wild rice, brown rice, white rice. If possible, avoid pre-cooked rice as it is less rich in nutrients

Preparing the raw rice water: Rinse a handful of rice and discard the rinse water. Cover the rice with water, stir and leave to stand for 30 minutes. The water will become milky. Drain and collect the water. You can use the remaining rice for your recipes.

Prepare the water from the cooked rice : Cook the rice in unsalted water, drain and collect the water. The rice cooking water is thicker, stickier and more concentrated than the water in raw rice. Use it diluted.

Preparing the fermented rice water: Rinse 2 tablespoons of rice and discard the rinse water. Put the rice in a bowl and add 0.5 litres of water. Cover and leave to macerate at room temperature for 24 hours. After one day, the rice water will smell slightly acidic and small air bubbles will appear. This is a sign that the fermentation has gone well. Mix and filter to recover the water. The fermented rice water should only be used on the hair.

How to store rice water: Pour the rice water (raw, cooked or fermented) into an airtight container, preferably glass or plastic (no metal containers). Rice water can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.

How to use rice water for beauty

Use rice water as a tonic to clarify the complexion, treat acne and remove brown spots on the face: Every other evening, replace your usual tonic with raw rice water or diluted cooked rice water. Using a cotton pad, apply the rice water to the previously cleansed face. Allow to dry before applying your other skin care products.

Use rice water as an anti-ageing mask: Soak cotton pads in rice water and apply to your face. Leave on for 20 minutes and then rinse off. You can also use rice water as a liquid ingredient in any homemade face mask. You can even mix it with your store-bought face mask.

Use rice water to tighten facial pores: Pour rice water into an ice cube tray and put in the freezer. If you need an immediate boost for your skin, run an ice cube of rice water over your face to instantly tighten pores.

Use rice water to soothe skin: Apply cool rice water to relieve mosquito bites, eczema, redness and rashes.

Use rice water to relieve sunburn: Mix rice water with Aloe Vera gel and apply to sunburn for immediate relief.

Use the fermented rice water as a hair mask: Pour the fermented rice water on your washed hair from roots to ends and massage it into your scalp for 5 minutes. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes and then rinse. This treatment should be done once a week (no more). The fermented rice water makes the hair more resistant and shiny. It stimulates the hair bulbs, accelerates hair growth and prevents dandruff.

Use rice water as conditioner: Use unfermented rice water as the last rinse water for your hair. It will make your hair shiny and soft.

Rice water is rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, moisturising and anti-ageing properties.
